Local newspaper archives provide a wealth of information concerning the club and the off field activities of it and the players in the village before the first world war, somewhat less in the period between the wars and not much at all post war until the mid 1950's. Cheddar Cricket club, like most, ceased to exist during both world wars, but was reformed after hostilities ceased.
The modern history of our club really starts in 1964 with the move to our present home - Sharpham Road Playing fields.

Note the autograph signing for a spectator at the right of the picture. |

The inaugural game at Sharpham Road saw us hosting Somerset CCC, since then, our ground has seen quite a few games against opposition of note, with visits by Worcestershire and MCC teams.
May 13, 1977--Somerset CC (Graham Burgess Testimonial) Viv Richards first ball duck
August 1, 1980--Worcestershire CCC
July 29, 1982--Somerset CCC (Vivian Richards Benefit) He made 116 this time
August 7, 1982--MCC XI
August 24, 1984--Worcestershire CCC
Sadly, in recent times it has been much harder to arrange visits by county sides--they don't have many "spare" days any more. |
