Andy Veal
Name: Andy Veal

To write a few little lines for the one known locally as ‘Vealer’, is nigh on impossible indeed and another website is required to note all the shenanigans of this well known character. Andy is a cricketer. An extremely self-motivated and determined man who hated losing his wicket even if he has scored a hundred. After several years of temptation, Vealer joined Cheddar from Winscombe four years ago and unsurprisingly added a massive impetus to the Cheddar First XI, regularly setting the pace and scoring freely, keeping the scoreboard tick, tick, ticking with 100 decibel sounds of yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep… meaning… there’s only one run there old chap! A very consistent performer and definitely one of our finest players, Vealer’s superb hands and athleticism, frequently help Cheddar’s cause by saving crucial runs and taking blinding catches either close, or behind the wicket. Off the field, Vealer is a cult figure, seemingly on the pub circuit for the past 20 years – bearing in mind, he’s only 26! Everybody has a guess to what Vealer has done that day, albeit cricket, rugby, skittles or just some ridiculous drinking feat. He is a local legend in the making.

Of countless hilarious stories that instantly spring to mind, a few favourites include:

Wedmore C.C. being Renound for their drinking abilities, they tried stitching up a teenage Andy Veal who promptly stopped all laughing by downing a pint of assorted spirits and ordering another.

Or, the time, (on tour), he took a superb caught and bowled, diving at 80mp/h, only for it to be given bump ball by the umpire.

Or finally, a personal favourite, his long suffering better half Sally, moaning about, what only can be described as ‘a library’ of porn, Vealer – referring to the tolerance of this, looked deeply into her eyes, placed both hands on her shoulders, sweetly and lovingly said… ‘That’s what makes you so special’. An all time classic.

With all being well, Andy’s biggest long-term problem, his leg, has appeared to come through the latest phase of surgery and he has managed to start the
2005 campaign. The initial fears were that he may miss as much as half the season, but all at the club are delighted he is fit, keen and available, only if selected!
