This proved to be an invaluable exercise, with many of the boys playing their first ever competitive match in the "Barrington" format played in the Somerset under 11 league. With Sunday's match against Cleve looming, it was a great opportunity to blood some new team members with 13 of the team unavailable for selection due to the Somerset "Gifted & Talented" Sports weekend at Milfield School coinciding with the Banwell Football tournament.
Bamber won the toss, and the team endorsed his decision to bat by putting up a competitive total of 229/8. Lots of lessons were learnt with near run-outs, a few missed runs where singles should have been converted to twos, but overall a very fine showing, especially from the novices. In the field, Balkham took 3 wickets and Tom Day took 2/2. Blair and Travis managed a wicket apiece.
The Butcher X1 reply had a great start from Sid Morris, the only player to make double figures with the slow outfield. Blair and Travis backed him up with 7 and 8 respectively. Young Dominic Mehlig took his first wicket at this level, Bishop took a couple and the rest were shared by Davidson, Patience, Gittings, Booker and Ford.
A very successful and enjoyable evening was had by all, and the return is keenly awaited. |
