Cheddar 'A' 162 all out beat Burnham-On-Sea 147-5 by 15 runs

Cheddar started the 2006 campaign with a home match against Burnham-On-Sea at the SCG. Cheddar batted first and found it easy going until skipper Salway holed out to mid on with seventeen on the board. A mini collapse then followed, as Houghton and McManus were sent back, but Sam Sims and Harry Batt consolidated until Sims was beaten by fizz and pop, and was bowled for 23. Dick Edmonds and Darren French both had time to clip elegant boundaries, but with the SCG pitch playing tricks, both failed to stamp their authority. However, with a score in excess of 150 required, trump card Steve Douce, (64no), strode to the wicket. His partnerships with Batt, (25), Joe Sims and Lewis Matthews, took the game away from Burnham, as Cheddar ended up with a very respectable total. All Burnham bowlers contributed, as Burkipp returned 3-43, Crenol 2-36, Lefebvre 2-28 and Wainwright 3-43. With Burnham fielding just ten players, Cheddar knew the score was effectively 0 for 1, but still required nine scalps and they fancied their chances, bowling second on an unpredictable wicket. Burnham openers Penfold, (27) and Lefebvre, (45), had other ideas, with Penfold in particular, chancing his arm on a regular occurrence. A tidy opening spell from Matthews, (0-13) and Salway, (2-31), saw the runs kept to a minimum, but the introduction of Spin to Win Douce, saw Penfold hit over the top once to often, and was snaffled by McManus. The latter was then in the wickets, as he had the Burnham keeper, Batt caught, before Salway removed Lefebvre and Crenol, (4), quickly. Andy Ashfold tried his best to keep Burnham in the game. His innings of 37 took Burnham close, but when he clipped Batt straight to Edmonds, and Burnham required rate ever increasing, the show was virtually over. In a superb match, that had everything except a jam tart, Cheddar held their nerves, but only just managed to cling on.
