2nd XI vs Chard, 7th May 2005

Cheddar 2nd XI 118 for 1 beat Chard 2nd XI 118 by 9 wkts

League runners up Cheddar started the new season where they left off the last with an emphatic win.

Choosing to make use of the new ball, opening bowlers Matt Loughlin and Dave Phillips started well nipping the ball off the seam and posing plenty of questions to Chards' openers Glenn and Clancy. Phillips drew first blood thanks to a superb diving catch by Che Moore. Veteran spin king Dick Edmonds caught Clancy (14) soon after and Cheddar were very much in the driving seat. Moore , with 1 for 4 from his twelve overs exerted a stranglehold from the football pitch end and once veteran Steve Russett (3-43) had the menacing Rogers (11) well caught by Richard Purkiss, Chard's innings gradually ran out of steam. A well taken catch by teenage 'keeper Ben Stacey and two quick wickets by Richard Purkiss (2-13) rounded off an excellent fielding display by Cheddar.

In reply, openers Bron Purkiss and Anthony Perrins were rarely in trouble. Purkiss (49 no) hit form early with some crisp shots through midwicket . Debutant Perrins (33) impressed from the start with some imperious off drives and an effortless six. Following an excellent opening stand of 68, Perrins fell to Hall but Phillips kept up the momentum drrilling 6 sweet boundaries in a quick fire 25 to see Cheddar home by 9 wickets.
